Five joint laboratories of the University of Hong Kong with the Chinese Academy of Sciences have been rated as “distinguished” or “good” in the Fifth Assessment of the Hong Kong-Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Joint Laboratories. Two laboratories have been rated distinguished, they are the Joint Laboratory for Biomaterials of SIAT-HKU-CUHK involving Professor William Lu Weijia of the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, and the Shanghai-Hong Kong Joint Laboratory in Chemical Synthesis involving Professor Che Chi-ming of the Faculty of Science. Three laboratories have been rated good, they are the HKU-CAS Joint Laboratory on Chemical Geodynamics involving Professor Sun Min of the Faculty of Science and the HKU-CAS Joint Laboratory on New Materials involving Professor Che Chi-ming; and the Hong Kong-Guangdong Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Research Centre involving Professor Tse Hung-fat of the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine.

The assessment exercise is set to strengthen the substantive cooperation between CAS and the Hong Kong region, promote the development of joint laboratories across boundaries, enhance academic standing, innovation and sustainable development capabilities of collaborators, and provide a platform for the development of research with profound impacts. The assessment is basically based on five indicators, namely “complementary advantages”, “sustainability”, “effectiveness of joint activities”, “talent cultivation and exchange” as well as “social influence”. There are 22 projects under assessment in total, 12 have been rated as distinguished and good.
