An opening ceremony for the 2018 Symposium of C9+1 Universities in China was held today (April 13) at the University of Hong Kong (HKU). The Chief Executive Mrs Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor and China’s Minister of Education Mr Chen Baosheng officiated at the event.
The theme this year is “Innovation and Excellence in Teaching and Learning in Research Intensive Universities in China”.
The event demonstrates the strong relationship HKU has with nine key universities on the Mainland, namely, Fudan University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Nanjing University, Peking University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Tsinghua University, University of Science and Technology of China, Xi’an Jiao Tong University and Zhejiang University. The Symposium is an opportunity for the universities to encourage engagement with stakeholders at all levels, including senior management, teachers and students to discuss innovation and excellence in teaching and learning.

Professor Paul Tam, Acting President of HKU, welcomed participants in an opening address and said: “We look forward to growing and enhancing our relationship with the nine top-tier Mainland universities in the League."
“HKU is committed to ensuring that students get a top-fligh education that also meets our aspirations for interationalisation, innovation and interdisciplinarity, all converging on impact (3+1 Is).”“In the long run, the collaboration will help to create more opportunities for academic cooperation for our students and teachers and build HKU’s reputation as Asia’s Global University.” Professor Tam added.

Professor Xiang Zhang, HKU’s President-designate, addressed participants in a video from the United States. He stressed the importance of enhancing innovation and excellence in teaching and learning.
Professor Zhang said: “Exceptional academic scholarship is key. At HKU, we want to recruit and retain the best faculty from all over the world, and to attract the brightest students, nurture them with intellectually stimulating and innovative teaching, and encourage curiosity-driven research."
"It will be important for us to continue strengthening our partnerships with universities in Mainland China and around the world, to enhance global impact and visibility.” He added.
The three-day event aims to be a platform for exchanging ideas, interactive dialogue and experience sharing among university stakeholders. The first day event on April 12 (Thursday) was a leadersip summit. Today was a panel discussions symposium themed around the 3+1 Is. Tomorrow (April 14) is a learning festival for students to share their innovative learning experiences.
The C9 League was formed in 2009 by nine key universities of the national 985 Project. The first C9+1 symposium was held at HKU in 2010. Since then, HKU has been establishing significant relationships with individual universities of the C9 League. Today, the institutions are committed to making the Teaching and Learning Symposium an annual event and planning to host it in turn.
