HKU Holds National Day Flag-Raising Ceremony to celebrate the 76th Anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) held a flag-raising ceremony at Grand Hall of the Lee Shau Kee Lecture Centre in the Centennial Campus to commemorate the 76th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China today (1 October).  

Council Chairman Mr Peter Wong, President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Xiang Zhang, Council and Senate members, Faculty Deans, staff members and students at the University, as well as invited guests, attended the ceremony.  

Following the ceremony, the HKU Yue Rong Dance Troupe unveiled a contemporary dance masterpiece, My Mother River, a profound artistic interpretation of the Yellow River’s legacy as the cradle of Chinese civilisation in dancing art. The performance wove together the river’s majestic currents, gentle ripples, and thunderous surges into a visual symphony, embodying the perseverance, ingenuity, and profound love for the motherland that have defined generations of the Chinese people, leaving an indelible impression of cultural pride and national unity.  

This year’s National Day flag-raising ceremony holds significance as HKU marks its 115th anniversary, a moment to reflect on the University's rich legacy of scholarship and its pivotal role in shaping continued success of Hong Kong and the nation.  Founded in 1911, HKU has long been a vital engine of national development, nurturing generations of talent and advancing research across various fronts, thereby strengthening the nation’s advancements in science and technology.   The flag-raising ceremony symbolised HKU’s mission to contribute to the nation’s development while maintaining its pursuit of academic excellence and transforming humanity’s future. Looking ahead, HKU will continue to empower students and scholars to drive high-quality development, foster cultural exchange, and generate knowledge that benefits Hong Kong, the nation, and the world.
